Being recommended for your thinking is a different business than being recommended for your speed — better margins, better clients, longer relationships. Speed referrals bring price-shoppers in a hurry; thinking referrals bring founders with real structuring questions and real budgets. Yet when most setup consultancy owners hear how they were actually described — “he’s fast, he’ll sort it” — the sentence flattens years of judgment into courier praise. This article is about what referrers can physically carry, and how the Law of Focus lets you choose the word they carry next.
The moment it happens
If you want people recommending your thinking instead of your speed, what are they remembering today?
A referral arrives — always good news. “My friend said you’re quick and you don’t overcharge.” You thank them and open the file, and the compliment sits slightly wrong for the rest of the day.
Quick. Reasonable. True, both. Also the two words that describe every competent competitor you have — and neither one explains why a client with a genuinely complex case should reach you before anyone else.
Why this keeps happening
A referral is not a testimonial; it is a compression. Your referrer had thirty seconds in a conversation, and thirty seconds carries exactly one idea. If your firm never installed a specific idea, the referrer reaches for the generic ones the whole category planted: fast, reliable, decent price. The flattening is not ingratitude — it is bandwidth.
And the ground is being claimed while the category sleeps on it. The market’s larger players are already moving their story from transactions to relationships — Virtuzone, for instance, presents its corporate-services expansion explicitly as long-term business partnership rather than one-time licensing. The “trusted advisor” territory is being fenced at the top of the market. What remains genuinely open is a question worth sitting with: what single idea could your firm own in a referrer’s thirty seconds?
The honest limit here: only your referrers know what they currently say. Which is why the first step below is simply to ask them.
The prescription
The Law of Focus, from Al Ries and Jack Trout’s The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, calls the most powerful concept in marketing “owning a word in the prospect’s mind.” One word. Federal Express owned “overnight”; Volvo owned “safety.” The law’s discipline is not in choosing the word — it is in narrowing everything else until the word is unavoidable.
“Fast” is unownable in your category; everyone claims it, so no one holds it. But a setup consultancy can own a thinking-word: “structure” (the firm that gets your structure right before your paperwork), or “banking-ready” (files built for compliance from day one), or a corridor (“the India-to-DIFC people”).
Worked example: an owner picks “structure.” The WhatsApp bio changes to “Get the structure right first.” Every proposal opens with a structure options page — before prices. The first question in every consultation becomes “walk me through how the money will flow,” asked so consistently that clients repeat the story. In six months, the referral sentence has a chance of mutating from “he’s quick” to “talk to her before you decide your structure.” That sentence pre-sells your thinking — at thirty seconds, referrer-sized.
What to do this week
- Message your last five referrers: “Curious — what did you tell them about us?” Collect the sentences verbatim.
- Choose one candidate word that is true, valuable to your best clients, and unclaimed locally. Resist choosing two.
- Rewrite three touchpoints around it: WhatsApp bio, proposal opening page, your standard first consultation question.
- Set a 90-day reminder to re-ask new referrers the same question. The changed sentence is the metric.
Where Kamai Ads fits (only if you want help)
We do not promise leads — nobody honestly can. Choosing the word and making every touchpoint prove it is the actual work we do: positioning first, ads after. Lagat nahi, kamai. If you want a candid outside read, the 48-hour marketing audit is 1,000 AED — message us on WhatsApp.
