The Hidden Costs of a Website Nobody Mentions Until Later

Most “hidden” website costs are not hidden at all — they are real line items that simply weren’t discussed, and almost all of them can be surfaced with four questions before you pay. The expensive surprises cluster in three places: things needed to finish the build, the 18% GST, and year two.

Owners search this as “website banwane me chhupa kharcha kya hai” usually after the first surprise, not before. This page is the list, in the order the costs normally arrive.

The moment it happens

The hidden costs of a website nobody tells you until after you pay tend to arrive politely, one at a time, each individually reasonable. A domain that “needs to be booked”. A stock photo pack. Content writing, once it becomes clear you’re not going to write nine pages yourself. Then, months later, a renewal.

Complaint records show the sharper version of this pattern: buyers describing a ₹2,000 booking amount, then a request for ₹3,000 more before work began. And separately, a renewal quoted as ₹2,000 in an email that became ₹3,560 when it was actually time to pay.

The costs, roughly in the order they appear

Before the build can start

  • Domain registration — small (a few hundred to about ₹1,200 a year depending on extension), but check whether it’s in the quote and, more importantly, whose name it’s registered in.
  • Hosting, first year — often bundled. Ask whether “included” means one year or forever. It’s one year.
  • Content writing — the most common mid-project addition. If the quote assumed you supply text and you can’t, this becomes a real cost.
  • Photos — either your own, a stock pack, or a shoot. Restaurants, salons and interiors almost always underestimate this.
  • Logo file — many businesses only have a logo printed on a visiting card. Recreating a usable file is small work but it is work.

At the point of paying

  • GST at 18% — the single most common billing surprise. A ₹15,000 quote is ₹17,700 on the invoice if GST wasn’t in the number. Ask “is this inclusive?” and get the answer in writing.

During the build

  • Extra pages beyond the agreed count, at a per-page rate that should have been quoted upfront.
  • Payment gateway setup for stores, plus the gateway’s own transaction fees, which are ongoing and not yours to control.
  • Revisions past the included rounds — worth asking what “unlimited” actually means before relying on it.

Year two onwards — where the cheapest quotes stop being cheapest

  • Domain + hosting renewal, at whatever the vendor charges rather than what they paid.
  • Maintenance, if you want updates, backups and someone to call. Published Indian pricing for website maintenance averages roughly ₹20,000 a year, with small-business plans commonly quoted between ₹15,000 and ₹30,000 annually, and low-end plans from about ₹2,000 a month.
  • Small edits, if there is no maintenance plan. Changing a phone number or adding a photo becomes a billable request.

A note on the subscription model: some vendors sell websites at a low monthly figure — marketplace listings advertise around ₹6,999 for a year. That can genuinely suit a short-term need. It’s worth doing the multi-year arithmetic, and asking one question: if you stop paying, what do you keep? Often the answer is nothing.

Four questions that surface almost all of it

Ask these before any money moves, and ask for the answers in text, not on a call:

  1. “Is this price inclusive of GST, and what is the final amount I’ll be invoiced?”
  2. “What will I be billed for that isn’t in this quote?” (Open-ended, deliberately.)
  3. “What exactly will I pay in year two, in rupees — domain, hosting, maintenance?”
  4. “Whose name and account will the domain be registered in?”

Question 3 is the one almost nobody asks, and it is where the real money hides. A vendor who answers it unprompted is unusual and worth noting.

Cost Typical range Ask before paying
Domain (per year) ~₹700–1,200 In the quote? Registered in my name?
Hosting (per year) ~₹1,500–5,000 for a small site Included for how long?
GST 18% of the quote Inclusive or extra?
Content writing Quoted as an add-on Who writes the text if I don’t?
Maintenance ~₹2,000–5,000/month at the low end; ₹15,000–30,000/year plans are common Optional or required? What’s covered?
Small edits without a plan Per-request What’s the rate?

What to do this week

  1. Take your current quote and send the four questions above as one message.
  2. Ask for the year-two number specifically in rupees. If you get a range, ask for the top of it.
  3. Confirm GST treatment before you send any advance.
  4. Decide now whether you want a maintenance plan. Buying it deliberately is cheaper than needing it urgently.
  5. If a quote is far below the others, assume the difference sits in year two or in scope — then check which.

If you want it done the certain way

We publish year-two costs before you buy, not after, and the price on the page is the price on the bill including GST. If a lighter option genuinely fits your situation, we’ll tell you which one. WhatsApp us; we reply in about five minutes between 9am and 7pm.

FAQ

Is GST extra on website development in India?
It is 18% and it may or may not be included in the number you were quoted. Ask for the final invoice amount in writing before paying an advance — this is the most common billing surprise buyers report.

What does a website cost per year after it’s built?
At minimum, domain and hosting renewal — often ₹2,500–6,000 combined for a small site. Maintenance is separate, with published Indian plans commonly ₹15,000–30,000 a year for small businesses.

Are “free domain and hosting” offers real?
Usually real for the first year only. The question that matters is what year two costs and whether the domain is registered in your name, because that’s what determines your options later.
